I realized at an early age that I respond to life visually, and initially, photography was my lens and language, but a craving for a more interpretive medium led me to painting. Being raised in New England with meaningful time spent in many areas including the Boston suburbs, Cape Cod, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine has made me sensitive to the cultural uniqueness and vernacular that is specific to the essence of New England. My landscape work reflects this love of place. I also celebrate and explore the power of nature, and applaud the efforts of all who seek to preserve open space and the health of our oceans in an ever-changing world. From ocean to mountain, there is a sprit of place that will capture me in an instant, and I can often "see" a potential painting in my mind's eye in a momentary inspiration. It is the process of realizing that vision that makes every painting a wonderful journey exploring the complexities of value, temperature, and chroma.
My style is Classical Realism inspired by the Boston School. My process and palette has been informed through instruction from admired artists including: Sam Vokey, Stapleton Kearns, Tom Hughes, William Davis, Jeanne Rosier Smith, Anthony Lones, Davina Perl (student of Paul Ingbretson).
In addition, my animal portraiture grew from requested commissions which I am happy to fulfill out of a deep love for animals and a curiosity of their relationship with humans. It brings me much happiness to capture the personality of a beloved pet. I feel that I fall in love with every animal I paint through such detailed study, which is what makes the process so enjoyable.
