I realized at an early age that I process my surroundings visually, and was always seeking a way to convey an emotional response to the world around me. For many years, photography was my lens and language, but a craving for a more interpretive medium led me to painting. Being raised in New England with meaningful time spent in many areas including the Boston suburbs, Cape Cod, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine has made me sensitive to the cultural uniqueness and vernacular that is specifically the essence of New England. My landscape work reflects this love of place. I also celebrate and explore the power of nature, and applaud the efforts of all who seek to preserve open space and the health of our oceans in an ever-changing world. From ocean to mountain, there is, as described by the Romans, a "genius loci" (spirit of place) that will capture me in an instant, and I can "see" the painting in my mind before it is created. It is the process of realizing that vision that makes every painting a wonderful journey.
In addition, my animal portraiture grew from requested commissions which I am happy to fulfill out of a deep love for animals, and a curiosity of their relationship with humans. It brings me much happiness to capture the personality of a beloved pet. I feel that I fall in love with every animal I paint through such detailed study, which is what makes the process so enjoyable.
